Highlights of Plein Air Locales
Patterson Environmental Park features a long entranceway through forest to the Great Swamp River with a newly installed boardwalk and side trails that offers space to paint/photograph the Swamp in intimate contact. Open to the public dawn to dusk. Go to the end of Main Street in Patterson; at the Rec Center turn left, cross the tracks (carefully!) and drive down the dirt road to the cul de sac at the end.
Ray Lake is a private estate with, yes, its own lake and little island, surrounded by forest and hiking trails, open vistas and a variety of forest environments. One time will not be enough.
Diverting Reservoir offers both riverside views and forest as well as the panorama of the mountains in the background. The bridge at the ball field is a perfect place to set up and see both upriver and downriver. It is closed to motor traffic.
Meet at the gazebo in the ball field to the left of Railroad Avenue. Parking on RR Ave and at the ball park as well as on Rte 22. Wide variety of painting and photo choices: river, woods, riverside walk for miles with turnouts, fields, and places within walking distance from the meeting place.
Rounded Crest Farms (formerly Mistover Farm) in Pawling. Extraordinary views, many new since the new owners took over. A state-of-the art equestrian facility with horses and other animals everywhere.
